I did this for a year I didn't bother using the crappy box Comcast gave me and just streamed everything (and used my antenna). If you get that plan you can log into the corresponding cable channel apps for the channels you have. Many cable companies sell slimmed down "internet plus" plans that come with internet, a handful of basic channels (mainly ones you can also get with an antenna - ABC, NBC, Fox, etc.), and a premium channel like HBO or Showtime.

Sling TV will allow you to log into Watch ESPN. It costs at least $30 per month, more in some cases. There is also a Vue app which allows you to watch TV on it, but right now its only available on a few devices (not Roku). The obvious one is Sony Playstation Vue, which will allow you to log into a large number of cable channel apps. What I dont want is the 250 dollar bill to get me a few channels that I'd like to stream past and some current episodes from. I'd gladly pay for individual access to content, heck I already do with CBS All Access and Sling. It doesnt make you put in cable boxes, or anything along those lines, its just an added service to their internet package that grants the consumer access to tv content through subscription based services. Its a cable tv subscription that is intended for streamers. My idea is similar to what comcast has with their stream blast service. The point of these apps is VOD and TV on mobile devices, not to bypass cable. If by chance there is a service that allows you to bypass the app requirement (highly doubtful due to the authentication process, but for sake of argument let's say it exists) speaking of it here would be "frowned upon". There may be more than one service, but they will still require a TV package subscription. The developers of the apps have agreements with cable companies, and they specifically require you to use a particular service. I know this an older thread, but does anyone know of a service out there that gives cable like subscriptions but is intended for streamers to use those channels that require a cable/satellite subscription? Until I am able to "categorize" my channel list (Feature that has been requested a lot), this system is what best works for me. My Live TV stations are there and in my channel lineup, I have my most used apps/channels on the top/beginning or at the very end. What I do is use the "My Channels" Roku channel to house my Live TV options to have them all available in a centralized location. The only bad thing is that streams sometimes stop working, are unreliable and what is available is "all over the place" makes it a "sloppy" setup but given that it is totally free, I can't really complain.

When I combine free broadcast TV stations plus what is available via OTT, I have quite a selection of free channels to enjoy. I have a small bundle of free Live Cable TV channels. Premium channels (Showtime, HBO) also blocked.īut, given that I can use some of these apps, plus what is available in Channel Pear, Tiki Live, SJTV, etc. That is why I say "I got lucky" but this is not the norm. I can watch A&E, Lifetime and History but none of the Viacom (CC, Nick, MTV). In my case, my guess is that it was an oversight on Optimum's side.

It's almost certain that if it works at all it will be a channel that is "esoteric". The cable companies have deals with the app developers on these things. You can try, but the chances are extremely thin.
